Aleksandër Moisiu University or officially Aleksandër Moisiu University of Durrës (Albanian: Universiteti i Durrësit Aleksandër Moisiu) (short: UAMD) is the newest public academic institution of the Republic of Albania. The University is located in the ancient city of Durrës and has a branch in Peshkopi. It was inaugurated in 2006 and is using the American system of education, unlike the rest of the public universities in the country. More than 1,300 students started classes as of October 2, 2006, now in 2011 has more than 10,000 students. The rector is Prof. As. Dr. Mit’hat Mema.[2] University of Durrës took its name from Austrian actor Aleksandër Moisiu, who was of Albanian descent.

The Aleksandër Moisiu University of Durrës is a public higher education institution which was founded by the decision number 801 of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Albania “For the opening of the Aleksandër Moisiu University of Durrës” on December 20, 2005. The university was first opened to students in the academic year 2006-2007, when approximately 1000 students from all over the country took up their studies. Today, in the fifth year of its existence, the University has around 5500 students. The main activity is teaching and research, but also projects and other extra-curricular activities. The university is operating since the beginning according to the Bologna Process' principles. In this way the program studies are organized in three cycles (bachelor, master and doctorate studies), and are expressed in ECTS system. Actually the university had 7 main bodies where 6 are faculties and one is a branch in the city of Peshkopia capital of Dibër District and Dibër County, northeastern Albania.
The university is specialised in accordance to its 6 main bodies: Faculty of Business, Faculty of Integrated Studies with Practice, Faculty of Political and Juridical Studies, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Professional Studies, Faculty of Information and Technology. The Faculty of Business in completed with the program studies of the three cycles (bachelor, master and doctorate) in different disciplines like: economics science, marketing, tourism management, finance and banking. The Faculty of Integrated Studies with practice is also specialized in economics but the way it works is different. This faculty operates according to the German model of berufsakademie where the students are in the same time employees in the sectors that fit to their program studies. The Faculty of Integrated Studies with Practice is focused on: banking and finance, tourism management, small medium enterprises management.
Aleksandër Moisiu University is a regional university situated in Durrës. The area of Durrës is on the coast of the Adriatic sea, 20 miles from Tirana (the capital city of Albania), and is the second most important economic area in the country. The area of Durrës is known as one of the most important tourism areas in Albania because of its geographical location on the coast, but also as one of the most ancient cities in Albania, founded around 627 BC. From this point of view Aleksandër Moisiu University is focused on developing program studies and activities that can fit with the economic life of the city like tourism, transport, and economics, in order to develop the necessary human resources for the future labor market of the area.
